We’ve seen a great shift towards telehealth services as a means to keep our communities safe and to reduce the spread of illness. We know that many people also have health and mobility considerations that need flexibility too. For those who need therapy outside of the formal office setting, telehealth serves as a great option for care.

For some, home is the most comfortable space to engage in work that calls for vulnerability, trust and compassion. For others, another designated private space can serve this purpose. Telehealth opens up more options for the “where” of this healing journey.

So, how does it work?

Telehealth services are delivered via a designated platform that is HIPAA secure. You’ll be able to access your appointments via phone, tablet, or computer, as long as there is a functional camera and microphone on your chosen device. Prior to your first appointment, you will receive detailed information on how to log onto the telehealth platform, ensuring that you are all set to get started.

How can I enhance the experience?

  • Access your appointment from a private space where you won’t be overheard

  • Use headphones for additional privacy and to enhance audio/microphone capabilities

  • Minimize other demands on your internet supply (i.e., gaming, streaming, other applications) during your appointment

  • Get comfortable! Have tissues, drinks, and other comfort items close by. Bring a notepad or list of questions if you’d like to take notes.

Additional Considerations

Like many things in life, telehealth may not be a “one size fits all” format of care. Your health care needs may require treatment approaches and coordination that are best managed in person. You may not have access to safe and private options for engaging in sessions outside of an office. You might be overwhelmed with too many other virtual experiences and want to reduce your screen time. Your internet connectivity might not be able to minimize interruptions during a session. You might simply prefer the experience of being with your therapist in person, in a shared space. For any of these reasons (and many more), telehealth may not be the best approach—and that’s okay. These are important considerations, as you deserve to access care that meets your needs.
